Numerical calculations of the adiabatic compression of a collision-dominated plasma in finite, single-turn coils have been carried out with the initial β and plasma state as parameters. The end losses drastically influenced the character of the discharge, as is observed experimentally. However, the measured heating rate for the electrons is much higher than predicted, pointing to an additional heating mechanism, presumably involving the dissipation of an initially trapped reverse magnetic field in the plasma.
