Measuring the electron distribution function of a plasma by the microwave-probe method

D.V. Gorozhanin, B.I. Ivanov, V.A. Miroshnichenko, V.P.

The paper describes a method of measuring the longitudinal-velocity electron-distribution function based on microwave probing of the plasma in the region of the electron cyclotron resonance. Formulae are given relating the electron distribution function to the Doppler shape of the cyclotron absorption line of an electromagnetic wave in a plasma. The authors discuss the distribution function values measured in a beam-plasma discharge by probing the plasma with waves in the 8-mm range.
