The decay of an ion density discontinuity in a collisionless plasma is considered when allowance is made for the effect of ion temperature on the process. A proper rarefaction wave is given. It is shown that the process can be described without recourse to complicated computations. The theoretical, numerical and experimental results are found to be in reasonable agreement.
