The Conference, the exact program of which is given in the Appendix, opened with an introductorylecture by Nobel Laureate Hannes Alfvén. The lecture contained material which Alfvén has discussed several times in recent years; in particular, he emphasized the need for a "second approach" to the problems of cosmic plasma physics.
