Guiding-centre diffuse pinch and local instability

The stability problem of a linear diffuse pinch is studied by a normal-mode analysis using guiding-centre theory. The general normal-mode equation capable of determining the growth rate is obtained. The guiding-centre Suydam instability and the associated eigenvalue (growth rate) are examined.
