The paper studies the hydromagnetic stability of a tokamak of circular cross-section for high values of βJ – the ratio between the plasma pressure and the pressure of the poloidal magnetic field. It is shown that, for βJ ≳,(R/a0)2/3 (R, a0 being the large and small radii of the torus), the tokamak is more stable than for small values of βJ.
