There are now many books providing an introduction to plasma physics and any new book must be judged against the competition. This book comes out very well. It deals with basic plasma physics and one of its merits is that the authors, who are both eminent in the field, have resisted the temptation to include more esoteric material. Thus over a wide range of subjects we are given an easy to follow and thorough theoretical analysis. There is an obvious bias toward magnetic confinement physics, but for many students this will be an advantage. In books of this kind there is not much freedom in the choice of subject matter. Thus we have single-particle motion, plasmas as fluids, collisions, waves, instabilities and some kinetic theory. These are dealt with methodically and clearly, and the text is interspersed with many interesting problems for the student. Having praised the book, perhaps I might draw attention to an omission. The experimental aspects of the subject are almost entirely neglected. This is clearly a conscious choice by the authors and is quite acceptable. However, since the theoretical description of plasmas has proved so difficult, a student might be left with a somewhat misleading view of our level of understanding. People who buy the book will have the opportunity of some fun with the computer disk provided. This allows numerical calculations using the cold plasma dispersion relation, and the exploration of some simple mappings.
