Plasma currents can be driven by means of rotating magnetic fields. This technique can be used to establish high-β-tokamak/screw-pinch configurations with arbitrary β. A linear experiment with β = 1 on axis has been conducted, and from the measured magnetic-field profiles the plasma current and electron density distributions have been deduced. The rotating field sustains the azimuthal plasma current, and hence it is possible to study stationary equilibria.
