The possibility of slow adiabatic compression of plasma in helical systems is examined. The technique and the advantages of this compression are described, its heating efficiency is calculated, and a possible ignition sequence is demonstrated. The large initial investment for the heating systems required (NBI or RF) may be reduced by using magnetic-surface compression heating.
