One roadblock to ICF (inertial confinement fusion) power production has been the difficulty of formation of thick, uniform cryogenic spherical shells of D-T at an acceptable cost and repetition rate. A new approach to this problem is proposed: the use of a small pore size, open cell, rigid foam structure as a sponge to precisely define the layer contours and to stabilize the liquid against gravitational slumping.
