Helicon is a new helical-axis configuration of the Heliac type in which the number of coils is minimized by replacing the numerous toroidal field coils by a single ℓ = 1 helical coil. Helicon has flexibility and potential high-beta properties similar to those of the Flexible Heliac as well as some of the characteristics of an ℓ = 1 torsatron. Devices with four, eight and twelve periods are discussed.
