This section describes tests performed on the individual coils energized as single magnets in the IFSMTF. At first, each coil was energized as a single coil up to its rated current I0 (also called 100% excitation). About a year later, after the design-point tests were performed in the full-array configuration, each coil was charged as a single coil to currents higher than its rated value. The results of these tests are also described here; single-coil tests using the pulse coil are discussed in section 7.The WH, GE/OR, and CH coils were not energized prior to the experiments described in this section. Two of the coils, JA and EU, were tested earlier in domestic facilities as single coils. The results of tests on the JA coil at JAERI and those on the EU coil in the TOSKA facility at KfK are described elsewhere [1–4]. An extensive comparison of test results for the PB-cooled JA coil and the FF-cooled EU coil has also been published [5,6]. Where appropriate, comparison with domestic results is presented. The GD coil was energized together with the JA coil in the partial-array test carried out in late summer of 1984. The results of these experiments have been presented elsewhere [7–9]. The superconducting busses of the CH coil were not installed during the partial-array tests; however, the coil was cryogenically connected to the refrigerator. These results were also reported earlier [10].
