Active ion temperature determination by energetic neutral beam probing critically discussed

The determination of space- and time-resolved ion energy distributions using energetic neutral probing beams is discussed critically. A prescription is given for the energy range available for the determination of ion temperatures. This range should be free from interference of the probing beam. Examples of application of the method to TORTUR Tokamak plasmas are shown.
