In this essay the idea of what constitutes a plasma is first discussed. This is followed by a description of a number of phenomena in particle accelerators that arise from the plasma-like aspects of the particle beam. Finally, various suggestions for alternative concepts in which the focusing or accelerating structures are replaced by plasma systems are described, with a particular emphasis on recent suggestions making use of plasma beat waves.
