Plasma-based particle accelerators exploit collective plasma oscillations to sustain accelerating gradients orders of magnitude larger than those achievable in conventional radio-frequency technology, opening the path toward compact accelerators and advanced radiation sources. In these schemes, the plasma source represents a critical component, as it defines the accelerating structure and strongly impacts beam quality, stability and scalability of the acceleration process. Modern accelerator applications impose stringent requirements on plasma sources, including precise density control, longitudinal uniformity, shot-to-shot reproducibility and compatibility with high repetition rate operation. Moreover, tailored plasma density profiles are required to enable controlled injection, matching and extraction of particle beams. This paper reviews the main plasma source technologies developed for laser and particle-driven wakefield acceleration and related plasma-based applications, including alkali vapor sources, gas jets and gas cells, plasma discharge capillaries and hydrodynamic plasma waveguides. The advantages and limitations of each technology are discussed with particular emphasis on plasma stability, modularity and long-term high repetition rate operation. Finally, the main technological challenges toward high-average-power plasma accelerators and future collider-scale facilities are outlined.
