This was the sixth in a series of international conferences which began at Argonne, II, USA, in 1974, and was followed by meetings in San Francisco, CA, USA (1976), Abingdon, UK (1978), Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Federal Republic of Germany (1980), and Gatlinburg, TN, USA (1982). The purpose of these conferences has been to promote scientific exchange among experts from a variety of disciplines with a common interest in plasma-surface 'interactions. Significant advances continue to be made in magnetically confined plasmas through the understanding and control of plasma-surface interactions at the first wall and other plasma interactive components.
