In controlled fusion devices, especially tokamaks, hydrogen from the walls is a major particle input to the plasma and losses to the wall and limiters/divertors are the major sink for particles. Most of the impurities come from walls or limiters as the direct result of plasma-surface interactions. Divertors modify the path for plasma-surface interactions and increase our control over them, but do not eliminate them. The search for understanding and for control of these plasma-surface interactions brought 200 scientists from twenty countries to this international conference on plasma-surface effects in controlled fusion devices. 140 papers were presented in 14 sessions.
