AbstractThe plasma behavior in a cavity of D3He inertial confinement fusion reactor is analyzed to estimate the efficiency of a pickup coil system adopted as a direct energy converter. In the D3He reactor, most of the fusion output is carried by charged particles. It is therefore desirable to use a direct energy conversion scheme for effective recovery of fusion energy. The results of a two-dimensional particle simulation indicate that the energy extracted from the pickup coil system is ∼20% of the plasma energy during the first bounce motion of the plasma in the magnetic field of the cavity.
