This report deals with the preparation of a 70 kg batch of lithium orthosilicate. For synthesis, a technique has been selected under which the LiOH and SiO2 starting materials form a preliminary product in methanol. The resulting suspension is spray-dried after water has been substituted for alcohol. This preliminary product is heated in a vortex calciner and converted into Li4SiO4. Experience has shown that the preparation processes described can be better controlled as the batches get larger. Kernels of about 0.5 mm size are prepared by extrusion of the plastified powder mixture and by consecutive spherification. The kernels are sintered in a fluidized bed.
