Linear Z-pinches with electron density typically between 1018 and 1022 cm-3 and electron temperature between 0.1 and a few keV can be generated in a variety of configurations. The configurations are described and applications of Z-pinches are discussed. Three Z-pinches experiments at Imperial College are reviewed. These are the compressional pinch, the gas-embedded pinch and the gas-puff pinch.
