Thomson scattering has been carried out on a cool (Te=2.3+or-0.3 eV), dense (ne=1.9+or-0.2*1024 m-3), near non-Debye z-pinch plasma using 2480 AA KrF excimer laser radiation. The short wavelength laser was employed to overcome the high continuum opacity of the plasma and to reduce plasma heating (both scaling as lambda 3), thereby allowing relatively high electron densities to be probed. The results show that the scattered signal intensity in the ion feature is consistent with the predictions of scattering theory for a Debye plasma even though there were fewer than 4 particles per Debye sphere at the plasma conditions used in the experiment.
