In previous studies, by means of molecular dynamics simulations, the atomistic mechanisms of hypervelocity impacts (velocities up to 9 km s−1) of tungsten (W) nanoparticles on large W targets were examined in detail. The impactors were W nano-spheres and the target was a pure single crystal W with the [100] parallel to the direction of impact. Studying the outcome of high velocity impacts in more realistic targets is the objective of the present work. A natural complex scenario is found in real targets (used in experiments or as engineering materials), these targets are polycrystalline W with some impurities (such as helium (He)), vacancies, and defects. Here, the effects of vacancies, He substitutional atoms, He bubbles, and grain size in polycrystalline W are discussed.
