AbstractThe JT-60 LHRF heating system was designed with broad frequency capability to inject a long-pulse-width high-power RF wave into a plasma. The system uses 24 high-power klystrons, each with an output power rating of 1 MW. Five operating frequencies are available within the range of 1.74 GHz to 2.23 GHz. The frequency can be changed at a rate of 150 MHz/0.3 s. This feature provides both plasma heating and plasma current drive. It also permits frequency correlation with the plasma density and current profile. This paper describes both the high-speed frequency tuning system for the JT-60 klystrons and the results of fast frequency change tests of the LHRF over the range of 1.74 GHz to 2 GHz when RF power was launched from the same launcher during a plasma shot.
