We present ionization and charge exchange (CX) cross sections for H+ + H2 and D+ + D2 collisions at impact energies ranging from 10 to 200 keV amu−1. A three-body classical trajectory Monte Carlo approximation is used to calculate these cross sections. In our approach, H2 and D2 molecules are modeled as hydrogen-type atoms with one active electron bound to a central core of effective charge and binding energy. Our classical results are compared with available experimental data and quantum mechanical results. We found that the CX cross sections for hydrogen molecules impacted by protons, as well as for deuterium molecules impacted by D+, are in good agreement with experimental data and semi-empirical results. For the ionization channel, our calculated cross sections for H+ + H2 collisions align well with semi-empirical results. We demonstrate that the classical treatment can effectively describe the ionization and CX cross sections in molecular targets.
