The (J*B) current drive mechanism which relies on travelling r.f. waves to generate steady toroidal currents in a Tokamak is investigated in the limit of strong toroidal magnetic fields. Using slab geometry it is shown that the current drive is dominated by the mode beating model in which the e.m.f. is produced by the interaction between the resistive mode and the whistler mode.
