In this paper, the basic principles of plasma transport and turbulence are outlined with suitable examples. Firstly, the crucial reasons for the need to understand the modes by which a magnetically confined fusion-grade plasma transports particles, energy, momentum and current are enumerated. Secondly, a brief, elementary and qualitative discussion is given of the collisional processes responsible for ‘classical’ and ‘neo-classical’ transport in hot, quasi-neutral plasmas occurring in modern tokamak machines. Thirdly, an introduction to the key concepts and phenomena of turbulent transport in ordinary fluids and in plasmas is provided. The principal theoretical tools required to analyse and model the transport due to plasma turbulence are briefly described. The exposition is restricted to fundamental concepts and methods. The vital importance of both experimental investigations and numerical simulations to the task of providing a broad, evidence-based approach to the problems posed by turbulence in tokamaks is emphasised. References to papers, review articles and books are provided to help the reader to navigate the enormous body of literature on turbulence and transport in fluids and tokamak plasmas.
