Reports the results of a collective laser scattering experiment performed on FT employing a 10.6 mu m laser beam and a homodyne detection system. Measured wavelengths, ranging from 1 to 5 mm, and frequencies, peaking at less than 100 kHz, corresponds to the drift waves instabilities range. Broad frequency and K spectra are observed thus indicating a possible evolution towards a strong turbulent state. No significant dependence of frequency spectral widths on the toroidal magnetic field is observed. A relative fluctuation level of n/n approximately=1-5% is found: on the basis of the measured spectra, an estimate of the diffusion coefficient gives Dperpendicular to approximately=104 cm2 s-1 which could account for the electron energy losses as measured on FT.
