The author studies the generation of longitudinal ion Bernstein waves by optical mixing of two high frequency electromagnetic waves in homogeneous plasmas. The created density fluctuation and its associated spectral form factor are computed and compared to thermal fluctuations. It is shown that the spectrum level is highly enhanced over the thermal level. Applications for active diagnosis are considered.
