Energetic ion tails created by ion cyclotron resonance heating can cause inward diffusion of impurities from the tokamak periphery. The inward pinch velocity is proportional to the charge of the impurities and can be comparable to or higher than the neoclassical pinch velocity for the present-day experimental regime. It depends critically on the plasma density and the applied RF power and is moderately dependent on the concentration of the heated ion species and the plasma current.
