The theory of non-relativistic hydromagnetic waves of finite amplitude in a plasma is presented in a simple, but systematic way. The emphasis is on stationary disturbances in a cold plasma. The physical meaning of the cold-plasma model, especially with respect to the description of collisional and collisionless dissipation effects, is discussed.
