AbstractA plasma clean-up concept based on metallic getters and two Pd/Ag permeators is discussed. The first permeator separates molecular hydrogen isotopes from the gas stream, together with tritium from cracked tritiated ammonia. Metallic getters are used to decompose tritiated hydrocarbons as well as tritiated water and to remove all impurities except helium. A second permeator separates helium from the hydrogen isotopes liberated in the cracking reactions. A research program has been started at KfK for the selection of appropriate getter materials and the definition of optimized working conditions with a tritium operated fuel clean-up system.Screening tests on gas/solid reactions as well as experiments with commercial gas purifiers are in progress. First results are presented on the reaction of N2, CH4, CO, CO2, and NH3 with uranium, nickel, and titanium. In addition, the PEGASUS facility, designed for investigations on gas purifiers on a technical scale, is described.
