Ponderomotive forces in Vlasov plasmas are derived from a Lie transform analysis of the single particle Hamiltonian. Using the nonlinear ponderomotive Hamiltonian in Hamiltonian's equations, ponderomotive forces, including spatially dispersive corrections, are derived in the oscillation-centre picture. In addition ponderomotive forces arising from the induced electromagnetic fields are derived.
