It is shown that the longitudinal currents emerging from the end sections of a tandem mirror can be substantially reduced by the application of ponderomotive forces produced by high-frequency fields from external sources. The case of ponderomotive force production by an oscillating magnetic field is explicitly treated. The required amplitude of this field appears to be quite small. Its presence does not affect significantly the ion transport and does not deteriorate the MHD stability of the plasma.
