The use of n=0 radio frequency (r.f.), fields to maintain linear Z pinch equilibria is investigated numerically in the MHD approximation. Self-consistent equilibria are computed assuming uniform temperature. The externally applied fields do not excite any waves in the plasma other than the resistive mode because the RF current density is parallel to the equilibrium magnetic field. The equilibrium current profiles are hollow as expected and the electron density is nearly uniform, in the central region. Potential applications for this configuration both in plasma processing and in fusion are discussed.
