AbstractThis paper describes how one can reduce substantially the amount of tritium in an inertial fusion target without any significant decrease in the output energy. We have shown analytically that it is not necessary to use a 50:50 mixture of deuterium and tritium, but instead one may use a 40:30 ration of the two isotopes respectively. This combination will result in a 40% reduction in the use of tritium in the target while the output energy will be reduced by only 16%. There results are backed by numerical simulations. This means that the tritium used in a reactor per day could be reduced accordingly. This could lead to a reduction in the total tritium inventory which is important from the safety and environmental point of view.
