In tokamak disruptions, a brief increase in the total plasma current—an Ip spike—frequently precedes the current quench. The Ip spike is commonly attributed to an internal reconnection event that lowers the internal inductance. Plasma current spikes seen in four fixed-boundary MHD disruption simulations support this explanation and are discussed in terms of the evolution of poloidal flux and poloidal magnetic energy.
