Solution of the eigenvalue equation for flute and drift-ballooning modes in a magnetic quadrupole

Trapped particles are shown to make a contribution to the unperturbed flute-mode operator L0 which is not Hermitian. This precludes the existence of a complete orthogonal set of real-valued eigenfunctions of L0. The first-order flute-mode eigenfunction is developed as a Fourier cosine series. Some calculated eigenfunctions and a dispersion curve for a drift-ballooning mode are also presented.
