The response of the scrape-off layer (SOL) plasma in the Frascati Tokamak to lower hybrid heating has been studied under different conditions of the main plasma. Two frequencies of the injected waves were used, namely 2.45 GHz and 8 GHz, with powers up to 400 kW and 200 kW, respectively. An appreciable reduction of the SOL density, up a factor of three for 2.45 GHz waves, and a modification of the density profile were observed in discharges with an averaged plasma density of ≤ 4×l013cm−3. It is proposed that these phenomena can be explained by the occurrence of ponderomotive forces exerted on the edge electrons by the wave electric field.
