The JET experiment is designed to have an elongated plasma. This leads to the possibility of axisymmetric instability. The stability problem is complex because of the need to consider the discreteness of the coils and their circuit connections and to take account of the transformer core, the resistive vacuum vessel and the surrounding mechanical structure. Stability is calculated allowing for these features, and the dependence on plasma shape is investigated.
