Experiments are performed in which a standing ion cyclotron wave of high amplitude interacts with a highly ionized plasma in cylindrical geometry. The plasma wave generates DC currents which form vortices closing within one half-wave. The magnitude of the steady currents reaches 40% of the amplitude of the oscillating currents.
