The kinetic Alfvén wave – the Alfvén wave with the perpendicular wavelength comparable to the ion gyroradius – is not only capable of heating a plasma but also of producing a current in the direction of the ambient magnetic field. To maintain the current density at the level of the Ohmic heating current in a tokamak, an oscillating magnetic field of 10−3 B0 with a frequency of a few MHz, where B0 is the magnitude of the toroidal magnetic field, is required.
