Using a detailed system of computer codes, astudy has been made of electron cyclotron heating andneutral-beam heating on a large tokamak ignition experiment. – For the case of Intor (B = 50 kG, R = 4.5m, a = 1.5 m, e=1.11 × 1014 cm−3, Zeff = 1), the power required for ignitionusing two different energy confinement scaling laws wascalculated for each heating method. Because of the centralenergy deposition and the peaked temperature profiles obtainedwith electron cyclotron heating, the energy needed to achieveignition using this heating method was about a factor of fourlower than that needed using 200-kV neutral beams.
