AbstractMuch progress has been made in the last two years in the U.S. magnetic fusion technology program. Notable advancements have been made in superconducting magnets, gyrotrons, reduced activation materials, pellet injectors, and safe handling of tritium to name a few.Advancements in fusion plasma conditions and economic, environmentally attractive reactor designs will continue to require significant improvements in the technology of magnets, heating, fueling, materials, and safety. The ITER process will provide a forum and an opportunity to accelerate the development of fusion technology through new international collaborations, and we should take advantage of that opportunity.
