AbstractThe knowledge of the force distribution caused by a major plasma disruption is of primary importance for the design of the blanket and to check possible measures to warrant the structural integrity of this component. Electromagnetic calculations, namely induced eddy currents and magnetic forces for the Karlsruhe Demo Solid Breeder Blanket and for the Test Module to be irradiated in NET/ITER have been performed using the finite element three-dimensional computer program CARIDDI. The calculated force distributions on the investigated structures are presented in this paper. The effect of magnetic interaction of the vacuum vessel as well as the presence of passive plasma stabilizer elements have been taken into account in the calculation. The shield effect of the vacuum vessel reduces the forces on the Demo blanket by approximately 35%. The presence of low resistance loops due to the passive plasma stabilizer elements (“Saddle Loop”) increases these forces locally by approximately 40%. The choice of Manet as structural material for the blanket causes great difficulties in the actual electromagnetic calculations. As the computer program CARIDDI cannot take into account the presence of magnetic materials this effect is neglected in the presented calculations. The expected increase of the force values is roughly taken into account using a separately estimated safety factor.
