It is found that Landau damping of waves with low phase velocity (υρ ≪ υte, the electron thermal velocity) is profoundly affected by toroidicity. The proportion αu of the wave energy imparted to the untrapped particles significantly exceeds their numerical fraction. Computed values of αu versus υρ/υte are presented. The implications of these results on current drive by low phase velocity waves are assessed.
