Plasma physicists are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of obtaining an understanding of basic plasma phenomena which cannot be explained in terms of any linear theory of small-amplitude disturbances, and which, collectively, are described as turbulent or large-amplitude phenomena. The first theoretical attempts at describing finite-amplitude effects were made over a decade ago, in the various formulations with the generic title 'quasi-linear theory'.
