Schematic of Magnum-PSI linear plasma machine. z = 0 corresponds to the surface of the target, Thomson scattering (TS, in purple) and Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES, in pink) are located at z = -31.2 mm. The TS view is composed of 50 evenly spaced Lines of Sight (LOS) orthogonal to the plasma column length (z). The OES view is composed of 40 LOS perpendicular to the column length. The fast camera, for measuring integrated light emission from the plasma, has a radial view of the plasma (in green) through a lateral viewport of the vacuum vessel of diameter ∼75 mm. The IR camera has a radial view (in yellow) that is converted to looking at the target surface by a mirror outside the target chamber. The mirror angle can be adapted to maintain the view of the target when moved in z.
Schematic representation of the Vapor Box Module (VBM) integrated in Magnum-PSI. The plasma beam enters from the left through the upstream aperture (U), interacting with the lithium vapor cloud generated in the heated central box (CB). Lithium vapor is recondensed in the two adjacent side boxes (SBs), positioned upstream and downstream relative to the CB. After exiting the VBM through the downstream aperture (D), the plasma impacts the target mounted on the Multi-Target Holder (MTH), equipped with embedded thermocouples, represented with blue circles outlined in red, and calorimetry diagnostics for heat flux measurements. Positions U and D indicate the locations where optical diagnostics (Thomson Scattering, Optical Emission Spectroscopy, and filtered camera imaging) investigate plasma parameters.
